A Simple Green Installation with High Visual Impact
For the RHS Chelsea Flower Show, Life on Walls worked with The Big Green Egg Company to create a natural green backdrop within a rustic outdoor enclosure. The aim was to soften the structure visually using vegetation while keeping the installation simple, flexible, and cost-effective.
The Challenge
The brief was to reduce the visual impact of the exposed timber framing surrounding the enclosure. However, the project had to work within a tight budget and there was no scope for installing a full living wall system.
In addition, the installation needed to be quick to assemble on site and equally quick to dismantle once the show had finished.
The Solution
We developed a simple and adaptable planting system that could achieve strong visual impact without the complexity of a permanent installation.
Standard guttering was installed at regular intervals along the structure to support plants directly in their pots. This provided a lightweight and flexible framework for planting while keeping material and installation costs low.
Trailing ivy was selected as the primary plant choice. Its natural cascading growth helped create a dense green effect while allowing wider spacing between the gutters, further reducing the amount of material and labour required. The system was designed to be maintained with simple manual watering, keeping the solution practical for a short-term installation.
The Result
The transformation of the space was immediate. The structure was installed in just one day, creating a lush green backdrop that softened the enclosure and enhanced the overall aesthetic of the display.
Once the event concluded, the installation was dismantled within a few hours, demonstrating the flexibility of the design.
The client was delighted with the result, and the project went on to receive a five-star RHS rating, highlighting how thoughtful, well-considered design can deliver strong visual impact without unnecessary complexity.
