EQ Bristol Living Wall Refurbishment

Restoring a Large-Scale Internal Living Wall

This project focused on the refurbishment and stabilisation of a large internal living wall located in the atrium of the EQ Bristol office building. Visible across six floors and spanning approximately 27 metres in height, the installation is a central visual feature within the building and plays an important role in supporting a biophilic environment for occupants.

The Challenge

When we first assessed the installation, the living wall had suffered from poor maintenance over time. Many plants had dried out, coverage across the wall was uneven, and the overall visual impact had significantly declined.

Due to the height of the installation and its prominent position in a light-filled atrium, both plant health and visual consistency were critical. The scale of the wall also meant that safe access and specialised maintenance procedures were essential to carry out effective restoration work.

The Solution

Our team conducted a full assessment of the existing system and implemented a targeted refurbishment plan. The living wall contains 24 different plant species, which required careful stabilisation to ensure balanced growth and long-term health.

To safely access the entire installation, our team completed specialist training to operate the building’s purpose-built maintenance cradle. This allowed us to reach every section of the wall efficiently and safely.

Using this system, we carried out:

  • Targeted replanting where plant coverage had declined
  • Adjustments to irrigation to ensure consistent water distribution
  • Ongoing plant care to restore balance across all sections of the wall

This approach ensured that both the aesthetics and biological performance of the wall could be fully restored.

The Result

The living wall has now been reinstated as a striking feature within the building’s central atrium. Plant coverage is consistent across all six floors, and the system supports healthy growth across the full height of the installation.

Beyond its visual impact, the wall reinforces the building’s commitment to wellbeing, sustainability, and biophilic design. Equally important, the maintenance strategy now in place ensures that the installation can be properly managed and protected over the long term.
