Brompton Square Living Walls

Transforming a Narrow Courtyard with Vertical Greenery

In 2020, Life on Walls delivered a bespoke living wall installation for a private residence in Brompton Square, London. The project focused on transforming a narrow courtyard by introducing greenery on both sides of the space, creating a more private and atmospheric garden environment.

The Challenge

The brief required living walls to be installed along both sides of a confined London courtyard, while also extending the height of the existing boundaries.

One of the walls followed a staircase leading down into a sunken garden, which meant the living wall system had to adapt to changing levels while maintaining a reduced structural depth to fit within the limited space available.

In addition, the planting scheme needed to perform successfully across contrasting conditions, with some areas exposed to full sunlight while others remained largely shaded throughout the day.

The Solution

To meet these constraints, we designed a series of bespoke metal uprights that could support the living wall structure while remaining discreet within the courtyard setting.

Composite backing panels were integrated where the installation bordered neighbouring properties, ensuring a clean and durable finish. The planting palette was carefully selected to balance species that thrive in both shaded and sunny environments, allowing the living walls to perform consistently across the entire courtyard.

The Result

Over time, the planting has matured into a dense and vibrant vertical garden. Several years after installation, the living walls have become a defining feature of the property, enhancing privacy while creating a calm and immersive garden atmosphere.

The project demonstrates how thoughtfully designed living walls can transform even the most constrained urban spaces into lush, inviting environments.
