Transforming a Basement Courtyard with Living Planting
For this project at Vicarage Gardens, Life on Walls collaborated with designer Maitanne Hunt to deliver a living wall installation within a compact basement courtyard. The aim was to introduce greenery and create a refined outdoor space while working within the constraints of a historic residential setting.
The Challenge
The courtyard presented several logistical and architectural challenges. As the space was located at basement level, all materials had to be manually lowered through an elevated boundary opening before installation could begin.
The surrounding Victorian brick façade required particularly careful consideration to ensure the living wall could be mounted securely without compromising the integrity of the historic structure. In addition, the presence of a fireplace within the courtyard meant that heat deflection measures were necessary to protect nearby planting.
The Solution
Using our aluminium channel living wall system, we delivered both the hard and soft landscaping elements required for the project. The lightweight system allowed for efficient installation within the confined courtyard while ensuring long-term durability.
Structural mounting points were carefully engineered to work with the Victorian brickwork, and integrated heat management solutions were incorporated to shield the planting from the fireplace’s heat output.
Despite the logistical constraints, the installation was completed on time and within budget.
The Result
The completed courtyard has been transformed into an elegant and inviting outdoor space. The combination of carefully selected materials and living planting creates a calm residential environment that softens the architectural surroundings while adding texture and greenery.
The project demonstrates how thoughtful design and carefully engineered systems can bring living architecture to even the most constrained urban spaces.
